Shanghai Jiao Tong University Information
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of China’s most prominent universities. It was established in 1896 as Nan Yang Public School, where it started out with four schools: the school of foreign studies, normal school, middle school and high school. Sheng Xuanhuai, the school’s first president, is also regarded as its founder.
Other good Chinese colleges include Nanjing University, Peking University, Tsing Hua University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University and Jilin University.
In 1905, the school was transferred under the care of the Ministry of Commerce, where it got the name Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry.
Through the years, the school changed names depending on its owner. Its other names have included: Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs (1906), Nan Yang College (1911), Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry (1912), Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung (1921), Nan Yang University of the Communications Ministry (1922), and First Chiao Tung University of the Communications Ministry (1927). The university was once again under the management of the Ministry of Education in 1930 and was renamed National Chiao Tung University. In 1959, a few years after the Chinese Civil War, the university’s official name became the Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The SJTU offers many courses under its undergraduate programs. Under the school of Science and Technology, the university has a Mathematics, Physics, and Plasticity forming Engineering department. It also has a school of Mechanical Engineering; Electronic and Electric Engineering; Software; Information Security Engineering; Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Environmental Science and Engineering; and Micro-Electronics.
Departments under its Biology program include the School of Medicine, School of Primary Medicine, Ruijin School of Clinic, Renji School of Clinic, Jiuyuan School of Clinic, Liuyuan School of Clinic, Baogang School of Clinic, School of Stomatology, School of Chinese Medicine and Hygienic Management and School of Nursing. It also has a Biomedicine Engineering, Examining, Nutrition and Pharmacy Department.
Courses under the Arts program include the Antai College of Management, and the schools of Law, Foreign Languages, Humanities, Media and Design, and International and Public Affairs.
Its other educational offerings include the schools of Continuing Education, Online Learning, International Education, and Techniques.
For its post-graduate programs, the Jiao Tong university offers several associate-degree programs like Animal Medicine, Automobile Applied Technology, Business English, Business Management, Communication and Information Technology, Computer Applied Technology, Horticulture, Food Technics and Test, Urban Gardening and Shipping Technology.
