Jilin University Information
Jilin University, JLU, is a national university located in Jilin, China. Established in 1946, it is headed by president Zhan Tao and is under jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education.
Other good Chinese education establishments include Fudan University, Nanjing University, Peking University, Tsing Hua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University.
When it was first founded in the year 1946 the university was under the name of Northeast College of Administration, before changing names several times because of mergers with other learning institutions. In 1948, it became Northeast Academy of Science after its merger with Harbin University. Later that same year, its name was changed back to Northeast College of Administration after it changed locations to Shenyang, Liaoning. It was renamed Northeast People’s University in 1950 before finally getting its current name, Jilin University, in 1958.
Now located in Jilin’s capital Changchun, Jilin University has eight campuses, most of which were acquired because of mergers with the University of Military Logistics, Changchun College of Posts and Communication, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Bethune Medical University, and Jilin University of Technology.
The university is sub-divided into 39 colleges, through which it offers a total of 115 undergraduate degrees, 192 programs in master’s education and 105 programs in the doctorate level in different fields like management, agriculture, medicine, history, engineering, science, economics, law, philosophy, education and literature.
The different disciplines taught at the Jilin University are divided into divisions. These are the Divisions of Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Information Sciences, Geosciences, Health Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture and Public Teaching. As for its postgraduate offerings, students can take up postgrad degrees in Philosophy, Chemistry, Physics, Foreign Language & Literature, Geology, Metallurgical Engineering, and Civil Engineering among others.
As for its endeavors in research, the university has over 100 research centers and laboratories, most of which are held in collaboration with other organizations and universities. The laboratories include prestigious institutions like the Automobile Dynamic Simulation Lab, Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry Lab, Integrated Optoelectronics Lab, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry lab and Super hard Materials Lab. Aside from these, the university also utilizes several laboratories in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, including the Supramolecular Structure and Materials Lab, Terrain-Machine Bionics Engineering Lab and Automobile Materials lab among others. The Jilin University library currently has 5.51 million books in stock and several Engineering Centers from which several projects with the government have taken place.
