Juntendo University Information
Juntendo University is a private institution of higher learning in Japan.
Similarly ranked universities in Japan include the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Ehime University, Kagoshima University, Osaka Prefecture University, Juntendo University and the Kagoshima University.
Also known as Jundai, the university was founded in 1838 and is currently headed by president Kominami Eiki.
The university started out in 1838 as a private medical institution called Wadajuku, at the time Japan was opening itself up to foreign trade and western culture. In 1943, Taizen Sato, the founder of the school, decided to change its name to Juntendo. A person with much skill in medicine, Taizen attracted many students who wanted to study him and learn western medicine. The university’s history is not all that clear because documents were lost during the second World War.
It wasn’t until 1886 when the university changed from general medicine to creating specializations, and opened clinics for specific needs like Internal Medicine and Surgery in 1886, Ophthalmology in 1891, Plastic Surgery in 1901, Urology in 1903, Dermatology in 1908, Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1910, Otorhinolaryngology and Radiology in 1912, Pediatrics in 1920, and Orthopedic Surgery in 1934.
Juntendo University’s pride and joy is the School of Medicine, which is sub-divided into several departments and divisions. Academic offerings under the school include degrees in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pathology, Public Health, Forensic Medicine, Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, Hematology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, Anesthesiology and Hospital Administration among others. As for it’s graduate school of medicine, the Juntendo University offers lectures and training over a wide array of themes such as Environment and Humans, Life Functions and the Human Body, and the Regeneration and Reconstruction of the Human Body. The university also has a graduate school for Health and Sports Science which house the Departments of Sports Science, Social Science in Sports and Health Science.
Besides its academic offerings, the university has various research facilities and institutions including the Atopy (Allergy) Research Center, Juntendo University Research Institute for Diseases of Old Ages, Center for Biomedical Research Resources, and Institute for Environmental and Gender-Specific Medicine. Most scholarly research, experiments and other endeavors center around the fields of Cell Biology, Biomedical Imaging, Molecular and Biochemical research, Proteomics and Biomolecular Science, Radioisotope Research and Biological Engineering.
