Ehime University Information

Ehime University (Ehime Daigaku), or Aidai, is a national university in Japan.

Founded in May 1949, the university was among the many educational institutions established after World War II in line with the Japanese government’s efforts to reform the country’s educational system.

Similarly ranked universities in Japan include the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Juntendo University, Kagoshima University, Osaka Prefecture University, Juntendo University and the Kagoshima University.

Ehime University began with only three faculties: Engineering, Education, and Humanities and Science through its consolidation with Matsuyama National High School, Ehime Prefectural Teachers School, Ehime Prefectural Youth Teacher’s School and Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical School. The university opened its Faculty of Agriculture in 1954 by consolidating the Ehime Prefectural Matsuyama Agricultural College.

In 1968, the university’s Humanities and Science faculty was further divided, creating the faculties of Science, General Education and Law and Letters. It opened its School of Medicine in 1973. When all of Japan’s national universities underwent privatization, the university became an autonomous university with a separate management body and was known as the National University Corporation Ehime University.

All faculties began offering graduate programs for masters and doctoral levels by 1993. It also became the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences’ host university, a designation the university still serves today. At present, the university has six faculties, including faculties of Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Law and Letters, Medicine and Science. It also has a Super Science Special Course offering for its undergraduate students.

The university ranked 20th amongst Japan’s 87 national universities. Its Science faculty is the most renowned, boasting world-class institutions like the Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Studies on Environmental Chemistry, Cell-free Science and Technology Research Center, Geodynamics Research Center and the Center for Marine Environmental Studies.

Ehime University has academic exchange programs with many universities and educational institutions around the globe. Its Institute for International Cooperation includes the Asia-Africa Center, the Office of International Planning and the Center for International Education.
