Hacettepe University Information
Hacettepe University (Hacettepe Üniversitesi) is a state university located in Ankara, Turkey. Other Turkish Universities include Istanbul University. Similar world ranked universities include Loyola University Chicago, Ehime University, and Florida International University.
It was established in 1967 and is currently headed by its rector, Professor Dr. Ugur Erdener. The university has two campuses: its urban campus is located in Ankara itself, while the suburban campus is in Beytepe and is in the woodland outside the city center.
The university’s roots trace back to the year 1958, when the Institute of Child Health was established and the Hacettepe Children’s hospital was inaugurated. The university was founded to answer the needs of the people for better trained individuals in the fields of medical science. The Institute of Child Health first offered courses in Health Sciences, specifically in the departments of Nutrition, Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Medical Technology and Nursing. The institute began offering more courses throughout the years, but it was only through a charter in 1967 when the university was formally established and its faculties of Medicine, Social and Administrative Sciences, and Science and Engineering formally accepted.
The university, which gets most of its funding from the Turkish parliament, offers 150 different academic programs and 200 postgraduate programs throughout its two campuses, with the main campus located in Sihhiye, and the other campus located in Beytepe.
Now, Hacettepe University offers a variety of degrees through it’s many faculties like the Faculties of Communication, Dentistry, Economics & Administrative Services, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Law, Letters, Pharmacy, Science and Medicine. Aside from its many departments, the university also has several institutes like the Institute of Populations Studies, Child Health, Informatics, Neurological Sciences, Oncology, Nuclear Sciences, Fine Arts and Public Health. It also has a School of Sport Sciences and Technology, and a School of Foreign Languages.
Aside from getting a degree, a student can also get short-term and vocational courses at the university. Hacettepe offers classes through its many vocational schools like the Bala Vocational School, Hacettepe Vocational School, and Vocational Schools in Health Services and Social Sciences. To help further it’s students’ education and aid post-graduates in their scholarly study, the Hacettepe University also has collaborations with different research centers like the Disaster Research and Application Center, Ataturk Research Center, Stem Cell Research and Application Center and Neurological & Psychiatric Application & Research Center.
