Istanbul University Information

Istanbul University (İstanbul Üniversitesi) is a public university in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey. Other Turkish Universities include Hacettepe University. Similar ranked universities include Brigham Young UniversityFederal University of Rio de Janeiro, and Kanazawa University.

It is known to be one of the oldest universities in the world, with a history that dates back as early as the 15th century. It is also known for its excellence in research especially in the various science fields.

Istanbul University traces its origins to the madrasahs; theological schools, that were created after Mehmet the Conqueror took hold of Istanbul in the 15th century. These schools were responsible for the education of the Ottoman society’s ruling cadres. Due to the need to adapt to modernization, the madrasahs were abolished, giving way to the establishment of Darülfünuns, institutes of higher learning, which offered more comprehensive education. The Istanbul Darülfünun, comprised of the departments of science, law, medicine, literature and theology, was established in 1900. Later, the school was renamed to Istanbul University, as mandated by the University Reform of the Turkish Republic’s first president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Istanbul University offers a wide range of courses through its 17 Faculties: Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Business Management, Faculty of Political Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Fisheries, Faculty of Communications, Faculty of Divinity and Hasan Ali Yucel Teacher Training Faculty.

The university also offers vocational course through its 13 Schools: Florence Nightingale Nursing School, School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Vocational School of Social Sciences, Vocational School of Technical Sciences, Bakirkoy Health Vocational School, School of Transportation and Logistics, Istanbul University State Conservatory, School of Physical Education and Sports, Vocational School of Forestry, Vocational School of Health Services, Vocational School of Veterinary Medicine, Sapanca Fisheries Vocational School and School of Jurisprudence.

Istanbul University has produced numerous alumni who have received various recognitions in their chosen fields. Some of the university’s notable alumni include Turkish President Abdullah Gül, former Israeli President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, former Turkish Prime Minister Suad Hayri Ürgüplü, former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, scientist Hulusi Behcet and Nobel Laureate in Literature Orhan Pamuk.
