UMBC owes its origins to the GI Bill which aimed to make higher education more accessible to the common people. Higher education in Maryland used to be dominated by the University of Maryland in College Park. In the 1950s, however, several state commissions saw the need for more venues of higher education. In 1963, the Maryland Legislature approved the establishment of a number of new colleges. Baltimore was one of the first places to be chosen as sites for the new schools. Late that same year, the Spring Grove State Hospital became the favoured site for a new university.

The University’s first administration building used to be the hospital’s maximum security ward. Dr. Albin O. Kuhn, an administrator and a distinguished professor at College Park, was assigned as the Vice President of the campuses in Baltimore. Dr. Laura Skellchock was appointed as the first Dean of Faculty and John Haskell, Jr. as the first Librarian. In the Fall of 1966, the university formally opened for classes.

The University of Maryland Baltimore County, MD offers 54 majors and 42 minors as well 20 certificate programmes through its three colleges (College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences; and College of Engineering and Information Technology) and two schools (The Erickson School and School of Social Work). Its Graduate School offers 33 master’s degree programmes and 23 doctoral degree programmes as well as 20 graduate certificates.

Some of UMBC’s notable alumni include CNN news anchor Tony Harris; West Virginia president, James Clements; musician Dennis Bowen; Maryland state senator, Allan H. Kittleman; Olympic swimmer Mehdi Addadi; Major League Baseball pitcher Jay Witasick; Texas state senator, Dan Patrick; and many others.
