The Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, abbreviated as SMU, is a privately-owned university located in Dallas, Texas.
It is owned and run by the United Methodist Church’s South Central Jurisdiction. The university also has campuses in Taos, New Mexico and University Park, Plano.
SMU was chartered in 1911 by the Texan United Methodist Church’s five Annual Conferences, the church’s regional bodies. The initial plan was for classes to start in 1913 but, due to some constitutional delays, classes began in 1915. Southern Methodist University was created because of the failure to move Southwestern University to Dallas. The Methodist Church’s General Conference took an interest in the establishment of a new university. Its officials therefore took the necessary efforts for SMU to be created.
Southern Methodist University offers 123 undergraduate and 127 graduate and professional degrees with 23 doctorates through its seven schools: Meadows School of the Arts, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Cox School of Business
Dedman School of Law, Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering, Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and Perkins School of Theology.
Southern Methodist University also houses a number of Centers and Institutes that serve as venues for research, conferences, symposia, lectures and the like. These include Cary M. The university is often frequented by tourists and non-students due to its scenic spots and it’s two museums: the Meadows Museum, which houses a variety of artworks as old as the 10th century; and the Pollock Gallery, which displays works by students and faculty of the Meadows School of the Arts.
Southern Methodist University has produced numerous graduates who have excelled in their chosen fields. Some of these graduates include several members of the US House of Representatives—John W. Bryant, Jim Chapman, James M. Collins, John Culberson—and a few US senators—Robert Krueger and John Tower.
