Polytechnic University of Turin Information
The Polytechnic University of Turin, or Politecnico di Torino, is a university in Turin, the capital city of the Piedmont region in northern Italy. It is known worldwide for its excellence in the fields of Architecture and Engineering. It is also the oldest technical university in Italy and is often referred to as POLITO.
The university is composed of several campuses with the two main campuses located in Turin: Corso Duca degli Abruzzi campus, which is mainly dedicated to engineering, and Valentino Castle—located on the River Po—which is dedicated to architecture. Other mini-campuses are located in Alenia Spazio, where the engineering first year take their classes, and in Fiat-Lingotto, where Automotive Engineering classes are held.
The origins of the Polytechnic University of Turin can be traced back to as early as 1859, when the Scuola di Applicazione per gli Ingegneri, or Technical School for Engineers, was founded. The school later became part of the Regio Politecnico di Torino, or Royal Turin Polytechnic, which was founded in 1906. During the early 1990’s, the school began to associate with other European schools, researchers and scientists. This has led to the development of Aeronortics as a subject and the establishment of various laboratories in the university. During the 1990’s several teaching campuses were established in Vercelli, Mondovì, Ivrea, Biella, Aosta and Alessandria.
POLITO is organized into three engineering schools, two architecture schools and a Graduate School. The schools oversee the teaching activities as well as some of the research that takes place in the university. The engineering schools include the First School of Engineering, the Third School of Engineering (Information Technologies) and the Fourth School of Engineering (Management and Industrial Engineering). The architecture schools include the First School of Architecture and the Second School of Architecture (Architecture & Environment).
The Polytechnic University of Turin has research links with various local and international corporations. It engages in up to 700 research contracts per year. Some of the companies it works with includes Schneider Electric, STMicroelectronics, Pininfarina, Nokia, Microsoft, IBM, Augusta, Avio, General Motors, Fiat, Ferrari, Compaq, Motorola, Intel and Thales Alenia Space.
