Osaka Prefecture University Information

Osaka Prefecture University is a public university in Sakai, Osaka, Japan. It is among the country’s largest universities, being a public university corporation. Locally, it is commonly referred to as Fudai or OPU.

The present university is relatively new, becoming a public university corporation only in 2005 with the merger of Osaka Prefecture University, Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing and Osaka Women’s University. The former Osaka Prefecture University, however, is quite old, founded in 1888 as Osaka Prefectural School of Agriculture and chartered in 1949. Osaka Women’s University was founded also in 1949. Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing was the youngest of the three, being founded only in 1994, although it had started as the Osaka Prefecture Junior College of Nursing which had already been around since 1978.

Similarly ranked universities in Japan include the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Ehime University, Juntendo University, Kagoshima University, Juntendo University and the Kagoshima University.

OPU is composed of eight faculties and seven graduate schools.

The faculties include School of Engineering, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, School of Science, School of Economics, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The graduate schools include Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Life & Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Graduate School of Nursing and Graduate School of Comprehensive Rehabilitation.

Osaka Prefecture University boasts of the Frontier Science Innovation Center, a research center wherein top-level research in advanced sciences are conducted. The center is manned by leading researchers both local and foreign. It is tied with the graduate schools of Science and Engineering.

The university is nationally ranked ninth in Engineering, sixth in Materials Science and third in Computer Science. OPU is most well-known for its Department of Aerospace Engineering, which boasts the highly trained engineers who were credited as the designers of the lighting observation satellite Maido-1, launched in early 2009.

Osaka Prefecture University has four school festivals that promote student friendship and entertainment: Shirasagi Festival, Anju Festival, Tanabata Festival and Yuko Festival.
