Korea University Information

Korea University is a private, independent research university in Seoul, South Korea.

The Korea University ranking is number 31 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include National Tsing Hua University, CityU, Sungkyunkwan University, and POSTECH. Other respected South Korean universities include Seoul National University, KAIST, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Yonsei University and Kyungpook National University.

Established in May 1905, it is headed by its president Lee Ki-Su and is one of the SKY universities together with Seoul National University and Yonsei University. The university’s founder is Lee Yong-Ik and it is one of the country’s oldest universities. It is also a familiar name in top university ranking lists by prestigious organizations like the QS World University Ranking and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Royal Household Treasurer Lee-Yong-Ik founded the university under the name Bosung College on the 5th of May, 1905 during the colonial period. The first site of the university was in Sosung before it moved to its permanent location in Anam-dong in 1934, where the main building was completed two years after relocation. The development of the institute was then hampered by the Japanese occupation and it wasn’t until Korea gained independence that Bosung was elevated to university status. By then, the university had three colleges: Economics and Commerce, Liberal Arts, and Political Science and Law.

Now, the Korea University is comprised of 16 schools and colleges namely the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, College of Health Science, School of Media and Communication, Division of International Studies, School of Art and Design, College of Information and Communications, College of Education, College of Nursing, Law School, Business School, College of Medicine/School of Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Political Science and Economics, College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology and College of Liberal Arts.

The university’s 56 departments are divided amongst these colleges and schools, with various academic offerings ranging from foreign language and literature to different expertise in Engineering. The Korea University also offers interdisciplinary courses which include Comparative Literature, Financial Engineering, Biomicrosystem Engineering, Micro Device Engineering, Cultural Heritage Studies and Telecommunication System Technology among others.

The university also offers many opportunities for scholarly research with its research centers and institutes like the Research Institute of Korean Studies, Korean Language and Culture Center, Research Institute for Information and Communication Technology, Institute of Biotechnology, Center for Information Security Technologies and Ilmin International Relations Institute. Korea University also boasts high-grade administrative and recreational facilities like the university library, museum, Tiger Dome and Ice Rink.
