Université Henri Poincaré (UHP), also known as the Henri Poincaré University or Nancy 1, is a public university in France. It is part of the Academy of Nancy and Metz and is considered to be one of the country’s best universities. Nancy 1 is a multidisciplinary university offering courses in Science, Technology, and Health. It plays an important role in Lorraine as a provider of higher education and research and is known as a prestigious historical heritage. The Henri Poincaré University ranking is joint 9th best university in France, and joint 365th in the world. Similarly rated French colleges include University of Montpellier 2, Paul Sabatier University, Claude Bernard University, Paris Dauphine University, College de France, University of the Mediterranean and Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University.
As of Janurary 2012 the Université Henri Poincaré, together with the Université Nancy 2, the Paul Verlaine University and the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine have all been integrated into a grands établissements that is now known as the University of Lorraine. This institution has a combined enrolment of over 52,000 students, is able to offer over 500 degree programs and has 101 different research centers.
UHP has campuses in Nancy and Lorraine. It has a total of five faculties (Medicine, Odontology, Sport, Pharmacy, and Science and Technologies), three schools of engineering (ESIAL, ESSTIN and ENSTIB), and three IUTs. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees as well as diplomas professionalised at a national level. Every year, the University serves more than 16,000 students from all over the world.
The UHP has 45 research laboratories which are in partnership with major research centres in the country. It excels in research in the fields of Electronics, Mathematics, Physics, Data Processing, Geosciences, Chemistry, Health, Molecular Biology, and Automotive, among others.
Due to its proximity to Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, the University enjoys strong international research relations. There is also great mobility of students. UHP has 106 bilateral agreements signed with 21 countries in Europe. Every year, it participates in 120 conventions which allow it to interact with over 40 countries around the world.
Henri Poincaré University, in 1996, established a Joint Service Documentation aimed at serving the university community. Included in this project are three university libraries which have materials on the fields of Health, Medicine, Science, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The libraries hold more than 340,000 books, around 2000 electronic theses, and more than 5500 online materials.
