Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Information
The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) or Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Portuguese, is one of Brazil’s largest federal universities. It is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro and has three campuses: Praia Vermelha, Fundão island, and the humanities core at IFCS downtown; it also has two other independent buildings, these are found in downtown Rio.
The institution was founded by President Epitácio Pessoa on September 7, 1920, upon the gathering of the city’s numerous independent public institutions of higher education. During that time, Rio was the Brazilian capital. The government was looking for ways on how to stimulate scientific production in the booming economy of the nation.
Some of the schools, colleges and other institutions that form UFRJ date back to Brazil and the United Kingdom of Portugal, as well as to the Brazilian Empire, and include Faculdade Nacional de Direito (founded in 1882 and reestablished in 1891, National Law School), Faculdade de Medicina (Medicine School), and Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (National School of Fine Arts).
The university was formerly named as Universidade do Rio de Janeiro and on July 5, 1937, it was called as Universidade do Brasil. The institution achieved the status of full autonomy on December 17, 1945, under the Brazilian Ministry of Education. It was then renamed as Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1965, based on the federal university system that was developed by the military government of Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco. UFRJ requested to retain its former name of Universidade do Brasil on 1960s during the grounds of the imposition of the current name by the military dictatorship. The request was granted which made it possible for the university to be called either name.
The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro offers 78 courses, spread across the various different centers and independent units.
