It is the state’s land grant institution and is recognised as a doctoral research university in medicine by the Carnegie Foundation. Its Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism is known for producing six Pulitzer Prize winners. Also, BusinessWeek ranks the part-time MBA programme within the College of Business as 17th in the US as of 2009. Furthermore, the University houses the country’s only Judicial College, which was established in 1963.

UNR was founded as a small prep school in Elko, Nevada in 1874. In 1885, however, the Elko institution was voted to be closed by the state legislature. It was moved in the same year to its present location in Reno. Classes started two years after the transfer.

Heads of the University struggled for decades to implement the land-grant legislation requirements. The DRI (desert research institute) and a med school were later established in 1960 and 1967, respectively.

UNR offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees through several colleges and schools. The University houses the colleges of Science; Engineering; Business Administration; Education; Liberal Arts; Human and Community Services; and Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Sciences. It also has the National Judicial College and the Cooperative Extension Service. UNR’s schools include a Graduate School, the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism, the Orvis School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the School of Social Work, the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, the School of the Arts, the School of Public Health, and the School of Social Research and Justice Studies.

The University’s athletic teams are called the Nevada Wolf Pack. Its football team participates in the NCA Division 1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The men’s basketball team had qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2004. Other sports UNR is known for are soccer, swimming, diving, women’s softball, rifle shooting and baseball.
