The University of Akron is a public university situated in Ohio, USA. Founded in 1870, the research university is headed by its president, Luis M. Proenza and adheres to the credo, Fiat Lux, or Let There Be Light.

The university was established in 1870 under the name Buchtel College, as an affiliate of the Universalist Church, with the support of John R. Buchtel and the Akronites. The university was granted the status of a state institution in 1967 and by this time was under the jurisdiction of Akron City. Since a lot of companies in the tire industry like Goodrich, Firestone and Goodyear had headquarters in the city, the university provided courses in the field of rubber chemistry by 1909.

The University of Akron is also known for scholarly research in polymers, engineering and advanced materials. Much of its research portfolio concentrates on innovations in commercialization and technology transfer of high-end industry materials, especially polymers.

The university offers around 300 areas of study in its undergraduate department, divided amongst its 12 schools and colleges: Summit College, Wayne College, University College, College of Polymer Science & Polymer Engineering, College of Nursing, School of Law, College of Health Sciences and Human Services, College of Engineering, College of Education, College of Creative and Professional Arts, College of Business Administration, and Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences. The university also has an Honors College.

As for its postgraduate offerings, the university has over 100 degrees at masters, JD, LLM and PhD level. The University of Akron School of Law offers specialties in trial advocacy, intellectual property, business law and constitutional law.

The University of Akron also offers courses in adult and continuing education, these offer distance learning and online courses for those who are unable to attend college the traditional way; they also offer training modules for company employees of different industries by this manner. The distance learning classes have taught many students worldwide, including countries such as Argentina, Spain, Germany, Russia, Japan and the United Kingdom.
