The Autonomous University of Barcelona, or Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), is a public university situated in Catalonia, Spain.

Founded in 1968, it is headed by it’s rector, Ana Ripoll Aracil and is one of the most distinguished universities in Spain in the Sciences.

The university was founded on June 6, 1968 as a consequence of a legislative decree which called for the creation of an additional university in Barcelona as the country struggled to rehabilitate itself after the effects of the Civil War. Due to another decree passed just a few days after the university was established, UAB’s academic offerings were divided into four faculties: Medicine, Science, Economical Sciences and Letters. The university acquired the land for its current location in 1969, and most of the university’s faculties and schools were transferred to the new location. During this time, the university also opened further professional schools and faculties.

Other Spanish college and universities include the University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of MadridUniversity of Valencia, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Complutense University of Madrid, University of Zaragoza, University of Granada and the University of Seville.

Presently, the Autonomous University of Barcelona has 12 faculties and 1 school, namely the Faculties of Biosciences, Communication Studies, Economics and Business Studies, Education, Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Arts, Political Science and Sociology, Psychology, Science, Translation and Interpreting, and Veterinary Medicine, plus its School of Engineering.

The university encourages its students to broaden their studies and offer minors in their faculties of Education, Science, Translation and Interpreting, and Philosophy and Arts in order to supplement a student’s knowledge in their chosen major.

The Autonomous University of Barcelona has 80 PhD offerings in fields like Engineering, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Experimental Sciences. It also offers Official Master’s degrees in specializations like Biosciences, Business and Economics, Communication and Journalism, Education, Engineering and Technology, History, Philosophy and Art, Medicine and Philosophy among others.

UAB also has several distance learning options for undergraduates in Geography, Statistics, Electronics Engineering and Speech Therapy. It also offers the Autonomous University of Barcelona Language Service, which offers training and lessons in learning other languages, with help from institutions like the Centre for Independent Language Learning and Catalan Language Department.
