The Sapienza University of Rome is both Italy’s and Western Europe’s largest university, with close to 150,000 people studying there. It was founded more than 700 years ago in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII in the hope that Rome would become the centre for the study of the sciences. The university is mainly located at the Città Universitaria close to the Termini station. Additionally it has a presence in many other parts of Rome city, and at four outside campuses, these being Pomezia, Civitavecchia, Rieti and Latina.

The Sapienza University has 21 faculties, including two each dedicated to Medicine, to Psychology and to Architecture. The other 15 faculties cover the fields of Economics; Law, Humanities; Political Sciences; Aerospace Engineering; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Studies; Pharmacy; Philosophy; Literature and Philosophy; Communication Sciences; Library and Archive Studies; Statistics; Engineering; Sociology; and Oriental Studies.

As can be imagined with a university established over 700 years ago the Sapienza University of Rome ha many famous Faculty and Alumni associated with it, these include three Nobel winners: Enrico Fermi; Daniel Bovet; and Emilio G. Segrè. Other famous people include the scientists Luciano Maiani, Giovanni Ciccotti, Andrea Cesalpino and Corrado Böhm. Non-scientists include Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe, Carlo Frugoni, Santo Mazzarino and Gabriele D’Annunzio.

The Sapienza University of Rome ranking is 84th in Europe. Other colleges and universities in Italy include University of Milan, Università degli Studi di Padova, University of Pisa, and the University of Bologna.
