Howard University Information

Howard University is a non-profit private research university in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It is a historically black university bearing the motto as “Truth and Service.” The former names of the Howard University were Howard Normal and the Theological School for the Education of Teachers and Preachers.

The Howard University, Washington, DC is the only comprehensive and research-oriented university that is predominantly African-American. The Howard University mission has emphasis on providing educational opportunities to African-Americans free of oppression and educating students to prepare them for leadership and responsibility in a complex world.

The university was established on March 2, 1867 by the United States Congress with the United States Department of Education funding the university as well as the Howard University Hospital. The Howard University School of Law was founded in 1879. In 1931, the Howard University School of Law became a member of the Association of American Law Schools or AALS. The Howard University got the attention of the nation when students of the university rose up to protest against a newly appointed republican member of their Board of Trustees.

The Howard University campus is situated in northwest Washington D.C. with Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau as the university president. Howard University has thirteen schools and colleges, these are dedicated to the study of the following subjects: Law, Mathematics and Science, Divinity, Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Architecture & Computer Sciences, Education, Communications, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Business, and health. There is also a grad school at Howard.

The Howard University publishes the Journal of Negros Education. The Howard University athletic teams compete as the Howard Bison in National Collegiate Athletic Association. Notable alumni of the university include Edward Brooke who was the first African-American to be elected in the United States Senate, the Rhythm and Blues (R&B) group called Shai which was formed in the Howard University campus, Ossie Davis who is an actor, and David Dinkins who was the first African-American Mayor of New York City.
