University of Memphis Information

The University of Memphis is a public research university.

It is the Tennessee Board of Regents system’s flagship university and it was founded through the General Education Bill in 1909. It opened on the 10th of September 1912 under the name West Tennessee State Normal School. It underwent several other name changes within the period between the years 1912 and 1941. Each name had “West Tennessee State” at its forefront. The university underwent a name change in 1941 becoming the Memphis State College. It opened its graduate studies in 1950. The college then changed its name to Memphis State University (MSU) in 1957. The first doctoral programmes were offered in 1966.

During the 1990s, MSU underwent its last name change and it started to officially be called the University of Memphis. The FedEx Institute of Technology and the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management were constructed in the late 1990s.

The University of Memphis, TN is one of the state of Tennessee’s three doctoral-institutions. It gives out over 3,000 degrees every year through its ten colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communication and Fine Arts, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, Herff College of Engineering, College of Education, University College, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, Loewenberg School of Nursing, and Graduate School. It also has several centres for advanced research: Center for Earhtquake Research and Information, Advanced Distributed Learning Workforce Co-Lab, and FedEx Institute of Technology.

Clement; United States District Court judge, Bernice Donald; former Memphis mayor, W.W. Herenton; actress Dixie Carter; artist Paul Edelstein; 1974 Miss America Barbara Walker Hummel; author Johanna Edwards; music producer Terry Manning; and many others.
