Complutense University of Madrid Information
The Complutense University of Madrid (UCM – Universidad Complutense de Madrid) was established in its present form in 1499, but can trace its roots back as far as the late 13th century when it was the Estudio de Escuelas Generales de Alcalá; this makes it one of the oldest universities in the world.
It is considered to be one of the leading public universities in Spain and leads the Spanish field in many core areas such as Journalism, Psychology, History and Pharmacy. Presently Complutense is overseen by Rector Carlos Berzosa.
Other Spanish college and universities include University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of Madrid, Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Valencia, Polytechnic University of Valencia, University of Zaragoza, University of Granada and University of Seville.
Complutense University is a very large university with around 100,000 students and staff, this enables it to offer a large array of courses; Complutense University of Madrid offers 230 different degree programs and an equal number of doctoral programs are available for study. The university initially had five different faculties;these were dedicated to the study of Arts and Philosophy, Theology, Canon Law, Philology and Medicine. These have been added to greatly over the years and the university offers study in standard topics such as Pharmacy, Odontology, Architecture, Chemistry and Physics through to film and business studies.
Being such a long established and re-known establish has enabled the Complutense University of Madrid to have an enviable list of former scholars and faculty. These include many nobel prize winners such as Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Severo Ochoa (medicine); and Francisco Ayala, Vicente Aleixandre, Jacinto Benavente, Camilo José Cela and José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (Literature).
There are many other notable people associated with the university including prime ministers and presidents of Spain such as Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, Nicolás Salmerón y Alonso, José María Aznar and Juan Negrín López; writers and poets such as Francisco de Quevedo, Antonio Machado, and María Zambrano; the philosophers Fernando Savater, Tomás de Villanueva and José Ortega y Gasset; historians de los Ríos and Manuel Colmeiro Penido; and the physicist Enrique Moles Ormella.
