Nanyang Technological University Information
The establishment of Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) goes back to 1955 when Nanyang University, the first Chinese language university outside China, was built from donations of Singaporean people from different walks of life.
The Nanyang Technological University ranking is number 19 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include Peking University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Fudan University, and Yonsei University. Other well ranked Singapore universities include the National University of Singapore.
After a few decades, Nanyang University merged with the University of Singapore to form National University of Singapore. A year after, a government funded institution was built within the same campus called Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI). This aim was to educate more practice-oriented engineers. This led to the NTI being named one of the best Engineering Institutions in the world.
A decade after, in 1991, the National Institute of Education, the only tertiary institute for teachers in Singapore, was absorbed by NTI. It was then renamed as Nanyang Technological University; often called NTU Singapore. Today, NTU has 4 colleges with twelve schools and 3 autonomous institutes, these being the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies; National Institute of Education; and the Earth Observatory of Singapore.
The 4 colleges consist of Nanyang Business School (College of Business), College of Engineering, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and College of Science.
The College of Engineering has 6 schools that focus on technology innovation. It currently ranks 4th in the world in the engineering publication. The College of Business has courses that are considered amongst the world’s top 25 MBA programs. The College of Science is Singapore’s vanguard for life sciences and science initiatives. The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences has built Singapore’s first professional art school, the Humanities and Social Science School and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, named after the former president of Singapore. The latter is known as the one of the best communication and information school in Asia.
One of the distinguished Alumni of NTU Singapore is Dr. Tan Swie Hian, who has received Nanyang Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient in 2005. He is considered as one of the most creative minds in Asia today. Another distinguished alumnus who has received the same award is Dr. Liew Choong-Chin. He was a pioneer in cardiovascular molecular medicine in the 80’s and 90’s and remains one of the leaders in disease-specific genomics research. He is well known for his ongoing Cardiovascular Education and was the first recipient in International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences in 2002.
