Medical University of South Carolina Information
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a public university which is the only comprehensive institute of higher learning in the state offering extensive and wide-range educational programs in the field of biomedical sciences.
The university grounds stretch through 50 acres of land located in Charleston City, serving more than 2,400 health care and medical students in the six different faculties of the university.
These university colleges include the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Dental Medicine, the College of Health Professions, and the College of Graduate Studies.
The Medical University of South Carolina is driven by its mission of safeguarding and enhancing the effectiveness of human life in the state of South Carolina and beyond. This charge had been carried out by creating a background of inter-professionalism in its education programs, medical sciences research and in the provision of complete health care.
MUSC offers trainings in medical residency for more than 500 health practitioners and provides degree programs in the undergraduate, graduate and other medical and health-related professional levels.
MUSC was established through a charter initiated by the S. Carolina legislature on the 20th of Dec in the year 1823. It opened as a Medical College in 1824, private in nature, and had become, at that time, the United State’s tenth medical institute and the Deep South’s first. In 1913, the State of Carolina took on full ownership of the school and the college continued to serve except during the Civil War, from 1861-1865, where it had to stop its operation. Expansions were imminent from thereon. The School of Pharmacy was opened in 1881. The “Training School for Nurses”, which is the current College of Nursing, began in 1883.
The First graduate programmes in pathology, pharmacology, chemistry, physiology and anatomy were offered in 1949. The School of Dentistry was instituted in 1952 and in the year 1966 what would become the College of Health Professions was established. In 1969, through the state legislature, it was granted full university status and its name was changed to the Medical University of South Carolina.
Today, the Medical University is considered the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) “home” foundation, a conglomerate of teaching hospitals and rural health education sites in the state. This consortium had portrayed a big impact on the education, sourcing, and geographic circulation of health care specialists in the state and in adjacent rural communities.
