The University of Göttingen is lovingly referred to as the Georgia Augusta (full name Georg-August-Universität Göttingen), and was established in the year of 1734. The University of Göttingen ranking is the 4th best university in Germany, and 69th in the world. Similarly rated German colleges include University of Munich, Heidelberg University, University of Bonn, Technical University Munich, and University of Frankfurt. Similarly ranked European Universities include Uppsala University, EPFL, University of Helsinki, and the University of Copenhagen.

It is a very successful university and has over 40 Nobel prize winners associated with it, most of these were from before the second world war in a period known as the Göttingen Nobel prize wonder. Some of the prominent faculty and students associated with the university include Max Planck, Beno Gutenberg, Max Born, Felix Klein, the Brothers Grimm, Otto von Bismarck and Edmund Husserl amongst many.

Perhaps the most famous holding of the university library is the Gutenberg Bible, which is a UNESCO world treasure item. It is planned to make this available to the public by digitizing the content.
