The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης) is the second university in Greece considered the largest institution in the state. It engulfs an estimate of 23 hectares adjacent to the busy central district of Thessaloniki. It composes of 9 Faculties made up into a total of 42 schools among which are 3 independent schools.

The founding of the university of Thessaloniki was administered through a government law during the leadership of Alexandros Papanastassiou; this was at the time of the first Greek Democracy. Since its institution, the university has become actively involved in several EU Education Programmes. The Office of the European Union Educational Programmes was created to give directorial backing for its programs. Management of its activities is undertaken by a senate assigned committee, with the Dean of Academic Affairs taking full responsibility. The Committee is made up of twelve people, consisting of Professors from all the Faculties of the University.

The institution had taken a significant role in Greece in the area of European educational programmes such as LINGUA, ECTS and ERASMUS. Within the umbrella of these programs, mainly European and many worldwide academic institutions collaborate in the exchange of students and professors. Through these programs, the university annually sends off an estimate of 500 students to other countries and accepts over 400 international students. A large swapping of a large number of teachers and researchers is also undertaken through these programs. In the current years, the learnings acquired from the EU Educational Programmes in the various educational sectors are put together as part of the SOCRATES Programme, which is an expansion of the existing programs of the European Union. The university’s position to partake in this extensive program engages collaboration with all of the 333-member institutions and expects to undertake an exchange of over 2,000 students and teaching staff each year.

There are over 95,000 students studying in the university. This number comprises 86,000 students belonging to the u/g programmes and 9,000 students identified with the postgraduate curricula. The personnel in the research and teaching departments totals 2,330; with six hundred and ninety four professors; six hundred and twenty five associate professors, five hundred assistant professors, and five hundred and eleven lecturers. There are one hundred and three scientific teaching staff and three hundered and six laboratory teaching staff involved in the special laboratories.
