University of Kiel Information

Located in the German city of the same name the University of Kiel (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel – CAU) was initially established as the Academia Holsatorum Chiloniensis in 1665. The University of Kiel ranking is the joint 11th best university in Germany, and 194th in the world. Similarly rated German colleges include Universität Würzburg, University of Hamburg, University of Köln, and University of Mainz.

Today it has grown to offer 103 different degree programs offered through eight different faculties. Though the university peaked in the 19th century and suffered badly from the Gleichschaltung, which ordered the removal of Jewish scholars and faculty before the second world war, the university of Kiel has bounced back strongly in recent years to once again become a leading centre of learning.

Some of the famous alumni and staff that have passed through the gates of the University of Kiel over the years include Erich Schneider, Johann Gustav Droysen, Friedrich von Esmarch, Alfred Heuß, Otto Jahn, Theodor Mommsen, Felix Jacoby and Hartmut Boockmann.
