Founded in 1865 the University of Kansas (KU) has grown in size to cover over 1,100 acres and presently attracts just under 30,000 students. The university’s main campus is situated at Mount Oread in Lawrence, but it has it’s medical centre in Kansas city and there is a further campus (Overland Park) at Kansas city. It is currently presided over by Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

Three of the major academic attractions of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS are its schools of Business, school of law and its medical centre. The university also has fine departments and schools dedicated to the study of allied health, urban design, architecture, education, arts, journalism, engineering, mass communication, nursing, social welfare and pharmacy.

Within the United States, the University is famous for its collegiate sports teams; these compete at the highest level in the big 12 conference; its American football team is often good enough to compete in the prestigious orange bowl, and its basketball team have been NCAA champions three times. As can be expected from a university with such a prestigious sports program, the University of Kansas has produced many fine athletes over the years, including American footballers Moan Norris, Gale Sayers and John Riggins; and basketballs Phog Allen and Larry Brown.
