Situated in Sapporo, Hokkaido University (北海道大学) is one of the leading academic centres in Japan. The Hokkaido University ranking is number 8 in Japan, and 181st in the world. Hokkaido is a leading university in Japan and therefore has many famous faculty and alumni associated with it, these include the authors Arishima Takeo and Nitobe Inazo, the composer Akira Ifukube, the biologist Ryuzo Yanagimachi, and the renowned computer scientist Hiroshi Ishii.
