York University Information

York University (Université York) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario and it is Canada’s third-largest university, Canada’s leading interdisciplinary university and Ontario’s second-largest graduate school. The York University ranking is 18th best in Canada, and in the 326 to 346 range in the world. Similarly rated Canadian colleges include University of Manitoba, University of Saskatchewan, Laval University, and Carleton University.

The York University has a student population of around 51,000; 200,000 alumni worldwide; and 7,000 staff. It is composed of 11 faculties: the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Faculty of Fine Arts, Schulich School of Business, the Faculty of EducationYork/Sheridan Design, Osgoode Hall Law School, the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the Faculty of Health, Glendon College and 24 research centers.

York University was established by the York University Act in 1959 and became a non-denominational institution. On March 26 of the same year, the university received the Royal Assent in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The university faculty, former faculty and alumni have been awarded 14 Pulitzer Prizes and Nobel Prizes.

The university has a strong participation in the Canadian Space Program wherein the Faculty of Science and Engineering is currently Canada’s primary research facility into Martian exploration. It has also designed several space research instruments as well as applications used by NASA.  It is in fact the only university in Canada that offers space engineering as program for an educational degree. York’s law school and business school have continuously been among the top schools in the country. One of the most influential and successful socially responsive programs in the country is York’s school of social work.

York has educated some of the most influential people in Canada, these include current directors and CEO of the Canada’s two major banks which are Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia; the prominent and largest media networks in Canada such as Rogers Communications, CTV Television and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; and several diplomats, judges, senior politicians including the Minister of Finance of Canada, the current Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal of Canada, the President of the Privy Council of Canada, the Attorney General of Ontario and the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations.

Steve MacLean,the famous astronaut was educated at York University in the physics department and later taught there before going to work at NASA. Other known alumni includes Barbara Hall, a Canadian lawyer, public servant and former politician; and Orville Lloyd Douglas, a Canadian, feminist, poet, and writer.
