The University of Bordeaux 2, also known as the Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University, is an institution under the University of Bordeaux system. It is one of the four main universities which succeeded the original University of Bordeaux. The University of Bordeaux 2 serves as the system’s life sciences and medicine center.

After the original university’s disestablishment in 1793, it underwent several reformations until May 1968, when the university was split into three. Bordeaux 2 separated from the main university and became a separate entity in 1968. Unlike the three other Bordeaux universities, which relocated to Bordeaux suburbs, Bordeaux 2 can be found in central Bordeaux.

The university’s name is taken from Victor Segalen, a French ethnographer, writer and naval doctor.

The Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University has two main curricula: one for Science, Technology and Health; and another for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Its Science, Technology and Health curriculum offers studies in biochemistry, biology, physiology, applied mathematics and cellular biology. It also has masters level studies in biology, health, mathematical engineering and economic statistics.

The focus of the Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum is in the disciplines of psychology, education, anthropology, sociology and physical education. It offers masters level studies in anthropology, psychology, specialized languages, ergonomics, cognitive sciences, sociology, education and physical education.

It also has short-time/specialized programmes in midwifery, paramedics and certification for medical, dental and pharmacy assistant.

The Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University has 10 research and teaching units, 3 institutes and 1 school of engineering. It has 49 Ministry of Education and Research-accredited research teams, which have affiliations with many research facilities in France. Research in the university focuses in areas of Neurosciences, immune systems, cancers, infectious diseases, vines and wine, mathematics, public health, biochemistry, cellular genetics, social sciences, humanities integrative plant biology and heart, circulatory systems, lungs and thrombosis.
