University of Tennessee Health Science Center Information
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, UTHSC, located in Memphis, includes the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry and Graduate Health Sciences. The pediatric residency program of UTHSC is affiliated with Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and residents in radiology, pediatrics, and other related fields at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Graduate medical educational programs are also offered in Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville; family medicine centers in Memphis, Jackson and Knoxville, and other continuing and public education across the state. UTHSC is part of the University of Tennessee statewide, multi-campus system. In 2010, according to US News and World Report, the UTSCH’s College of Pharmacy ranked 16th amongst American pharmacy schools.
The Health Science Center offers Master of Science (MS), Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D), Doctor of Nursing Science, and degrees of Bachelor of Science in certain fields. Additional combined degree programs including Ph.D, MD; DNP; and Ph.D, Pharm.D are also offered. The university received specialized accreditation in Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Commission on Dental Accreditation and American Dental Association (ADA).
The office of Graduate Medical Education, GME, oversees 55 different fellowships and residency programs on the UTHSC campus for medical school graduates. The University of Tennessee GME Program is statewide with around 900 residents that are training in various participating hospitals located in Nashville, Memphis, Jackson, Chattanooga and Knoxville. UTHSC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to grant masters’, doctoral and baccalaureate degrees. Each of the professional programs and colleges is accredited by the right agency for the program or profession.
One of the most renowned faculties of UTHSC is Nobel laureate Peter C. Doherty, a researcher in the field of medicine and an Australian Veterinary Surgeon. In 1995, Doherty also received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research and jointly with Rolf M. Zinkernagel, they acquired the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996.
