The University of Tasmania (UTAS), was officially founded on 1 January 1890. It is a medium-sized public institution based on the island of Tasmania in Australia. The University of Tasmania ranking is as number 12 best university in Australia, and 294th in the world. Similarly rated colleges in Oz include Macquarie University, Flinders University, La Trobe University, and University of Newcastle.

It was the fourth university that was founded in the nineteenth century Australia. The University of Tasmania is included in the top most members of the international Association of Commonwealth Universities and is considered to be a sandstone university.

The University of Tasmania offer a wide array of both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in various disciplines. UTAS has been consistently included in the top 10 best universities in Australia in terms of research and has many associations with faculty based research centers, cooperative research centers and with 20 specialist research institutes—all of which are noted as internationally and nationally competitive leaders.

The current student population of the University of Tasmania is approximately around 26,800 this includes 6,000 on and offshore international students, and over 1000 postgraduate students.

UTAS was established after the closure of overseas scholarships provided funds in 1890. The first campus was the Queen’s Domain in Hobart; Richard Deodatus Poulett Harris became the university’s first warden of the senate as he had been a long advocate of the establishment of the university. During the First World War, the institution had over 100 students and numerous Tasmanian graduates were influential in both politics and law.

The University of Tasmania has three main campuses

  • Northern campus. Located at the suburb of Newnham, around 10 minutes from the center of Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city. The Australian Maritime College is based on the Newnham campus.
  • Southern campus. About 10 minutes away from the Hobard CBD, the southern campus covers a 100-hectare site in Sandy Bay that overlooks the estuary of the River Derwent and has the majestic Mount Wellington as its backdrop.
  • Vibrant Cradle Coast campus. Located in Burnie that caters for students and academics in the north-western part of the state. In 2008, this campus underwent a significant expansion and became the University’s state-of the-art Rural Clinical School in Burnie.

The University of Tasmania is now offering paramedic and nursing courses from the Rozelle and Darlinghurst campuses.
