URI received its first charter in 1888 as the main agricultural school for the state of Rhode Island. The school was renamed to the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1892. There were only 17 students in the initial class and it took them just two years to graduate. The school changed its name again in 1909 to Rhode Island State College. It expanded its programmes beyond the agricultural mandate it had when it first operated. Through an act created by the General Assembly in 1951, the college was transformed into the present form; as the University of Rhode Island.
