University of Newcastle Information

The University of Newcastle (UoN) is a public university in Australia which was founded in 1965 under the management of the University of New South Wales (previously called University of Technology New South Wales). The University of Newcastle ranking is number 11 in Australia, and 284th best university in the world. Similarly rated colleges in Oz include Macquarie University, Flinders University, Murdoch University, University of Tasmania, and La Trobe University.

The creation of this university is the result of an aggressive campaign conducted by the residents in Hunter. The university only had five students when it opened its doors to the public. Studies at the University of Newcastle back then centered on only mathematics, engineering and science. However, with the support of the community, the university grew and became an independent institution. To date, the university offers 85 undergraduate programs.

The UoN’s different programs are grouped under five main faculties. These facilities are: Education and Arts, Business and Law, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health, and Science and Information Technology. Under the faculty of Education and Arts, the university has a School of Drama, Fine Art and Music, School of Humanities, School of Education and Social Science and the Wollotuka School of Aboriginal Studies. Its Business and Law faculty is comprised of its School of Business and Management, School of Law, School of Economics, Politics and Tourism and the Newcastle Graduate School of Business.

The university of Newcastle has a School of Engineering, School of Architecture and the Built Environment and School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science under its Engineering and the Built Environment faculty. It also has a School of Health Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, School of Nursing and Midwifery and the University of Newcastle School of Medicine and Public Health under its Health faculty. Schools under the Information Technology faculty include the School of Psychology, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and School of Environmental and Life Sciences.

The UoN has produced several alumni notable for their contributions in the arts like Australian theater director David Berthold, critic and author Janeen Webb, and Jonathan Biggins, a comedian, writer, actor and singer. Forerunners in the political world like MP Cheryl Kernot, Australian ambassador Gary Quinlan and Singaporean Minister for Health Khaw Boon Wan were also graduates of the university of Newcastle.
