Although commonly known as Newcastle University the full name of this North Eastern England educational establishment is the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Although only given the right to be a university in its own right since 1963, Newcastle can trace its roots back much further with the School of Medicine dating back to 1834; at this time the degrees had to be granted by either Durham University or the university of London system.
TheUniversity of Newcastle upon Tyne ranking is number 33 in the University Review best UK university list. Similarly ranked colleges include University of Birmingham, Kings College London, Queen Mary, and University of Leeds.
Today Newcastle University caters for just under twenty thousand students and it’s running is overseen by the Vice Chancellor Chris Brink. The university is well thought of in the United Kingdom and it ranks highly in many university ranking lists; many of the subjects that it teaches are rated as being in the the best ten in the country.
The university of Newcastle upon Tyne has three major Faculties. The faculty of Humanities and Social Science caters for subjects such as Arts, Education, literature and History; the faculty of Medical Sciences covers Dentistry, Biomedicine, Medicine and Neurobiology; the faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering’s topics range from biology, through chemical engineering to Mathematics.
Newcastle University has managed to build up a very respectable list of staff and alumni; these include the well respected journalist Kate Adie; writers such as Robert Carter, Debbie Horsfield, Peter Straughan and Alan Plater; politicians Alexander Downer, Lord Redesdale and Bruce Babbitt; the sports stars Ed Coode and Geoff Parling; and the singers Bryan Ferry and Paul Smith.
