Durham University Ranking and Address

Durham University Information

Although the Durham University was officially founded by the government in 1832 it can trace its roots back much further, and lays claim top be the third oldest university in England.

The reason that it was not until the early 19th century that Durham could officially become a university was due to a decree by Oxford and Cambridge, who were concerned that their reputation as the centres of learning in England could be challenged.

Like Oxford, Cambridge, and York, Durham University is a collegiate university and is proud of its traditions; there are 16 colleges in all, the oldest of which is University College. Although the chancellor of the Durham University is the writer Bill Bryson, this is more of an honorable role; the person who takes daily charge of the university is the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chris Higgins.

The Durham University ranking number 7 in the University Review List of best UK universities. Similarly ranked colleges include University of Bath, Lancaster University, UCL, and University of Warwick.
