TU Berlin Information

Although established in its current form as late as 1946, the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin -TUB – Berlin Institute of Technology) can trace its roots back to the late 18th century; a part of the modern day university used to be the mining academy which was created in 1770. Today the university attracts around 29,000 students and is headed by president Kutzler. The TU Berlin ranking is the joint 15th best university in Germany, and in the 365 to 390 range in the world. Similarly rated German colleges include Dresden University of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, University of Bochum, and University of Düsseldorf.

The TU Berlin has seven major schools and offers around 50 different courses. The schools at Berlin cater for the following major topic areas: Building; Computer Science; Economics; Electrical Engineering; Engineering; Environment; Humanities; Management; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Natural Sciences; Planning; Process Sciences; and Transport Systems.

Being a long established and distinguished institution the TU Berlin has seen many fabulous and famous people pass through its gates, these include no less than eight nobel prize winners! These are as follows: Carl Bosch, Fritz Haber, Wolfgang Paul, George de Hevesy (Chemistry) Dennis Gabor, Gustav Ludwig Hertz, Ernst Ruska, Eugene Wigner (Physics).

In addition to some of the distinguished people listed above such as Hertz many other faculty and alumni are associated with the TU Berlin; these include: Wernher von Braun (Nazi rocketeer); the architect Wassili Luckhardt; Erwin Müller (Microscopy); and Konrad Zuse (computer pioneer).
