The New Jersey Institute of Technology, abbreviated as NJIT, is the science and technology university of the State of New Jersey, United States. It is known for its superior research capabilities in the fields of polymer science, stem cell research, solar physics, smart gun technology and nanotechnology. The university is colloquially known as the Newark College of Engineering, its official name between 1919 and 1975.

NJIT was established in 1881 under the name “Newark Technical School”. It was created to assess Newark’s rapidly growing industrial economy. The creation of the technical school obtained the sponsorship of the Newark Board of Trade with an additional grant of equal amount from New Jersey’s state legislature. Furious fund-raising activities were conducted by both the public and private sectors which allowed the new school to fully operate in 1884. The first students, a total of 88, attended classes in drawing, mathematics and science, subjects which were viewed as necessary to produce a capable industrial work force. Numerous developments led to the establishment of several facilities within the school. In 1919, the school was renamed into the Newark College of Engineering and finally in 1975, it became a full-fledged technological school and was thus renamed into the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its six colleges and one school: Newark College of Engineering, College of Science and Liberal Arts, College of Architecture and Design, Albert Dorman Honors College, College of Computing Sciences and School of Management. The Albert Dorman Honors College is a special college such that it only accepts students with a certain level of achievement. The college allows its students to interact and study with fellow high-achieving students and faculty members.

Since NJIT is a research university, it houses a number of facilities that allow high-level research in various advanced fields. Notable research centers in the university include the Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research and the National Center for Transportation and Industrial Productivity.

Pawlikowski, astronaut Wally Schirra, NASA scientist Charles Speziale, former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman and Louis Berger Group vice president Jim Stamatis, among others.
