Bielefeld University (Universität Bielefeld) is one of the youngest German universities and promotes a new original style of organization based on the principle of re-establishing the unity between research and teaching. The Bielefeld University ranking is the joint 24th best university in Germany, and joint 275th in the world. Similarly rated German colleges include University of Stuttgart, TU Darmstadt, University of Duisburg-Essen, and University of Halle-Wittenberg.

Founded in 1969, the University claims itself to be “a new type” university focusing on interdisciplinary research supported by an all-in-one university building enclosing all 13 faculties along with research facilities.

The Faculty of Sociology, the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Pedagogy at Bielefeld University have gained special recognition not only in Germany, but across Europe as well. Apart from Bachelor’s Master’s and Doctor’s degree programs, the University offers the Diploma degree, the State Examination for Teachers degree, the State Examination in Legal Studies degree as well as a few more, including their unique Promotion degree, which allows reaching the doctoral level faster.

Bielefeld University Facilities

Bielefeld University stresses the role of research and is home to more than 20 research institutes and centers. The Center for Interdisciplinary Research is the main research facility welcoming scholars from all over the world to come and work on interdisciplinary subjects and in research and working groups.

The Bielefeld University building is a massive construction embracing not only all the lecture halls, multi-media classrooms, a huge library, and an impressive number of research facilities, but also the inner-university market place and a vibrant meeting site. There is a swimming pool, a sports gym, tennis courts and football fields providing excellent recreational opportunities for all students. The Teutoburg Forest is also located in the immediate vicinity.

Bielefeld University encourages foreign students to enroll into its programs and courses, and runs a number of facilities oriented on students from abroad. These include halls of residence (room, apartments and flats) and youth hostels, which can be applied for by all international students.
